Iwo Jima Memorial
There are two reasons to visit the Iwo Jima Memorial, the first one is for the memorial itself, the second one is to get a great unobstructed view of the DC skyline. From here, you can see the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Memorial, the Capitol Hill and the Jefferson Memorial. I used to live right across the street, so I got to visit this place at various times of the year, dusk or dawn, sun or snow (snow scene above taken in 1991). During the summer time, the marines come here every Tuesday nights to show off their ceremonial drills, they call it the sunset parade. The best time to visit this memorial, of course, is during the annual July 4th Independence Day fireworks, the skyline back drop view from here is way better than the Smithsonian Mall, but be prepared for the crowds (and I mean a big one) and the follow on traffic jam.
